The safest professions during recessions and slowdowns

Almost all the professions are prone to slowdown, recession or even a depression. However, there are certain professions which are either remaining unscathed completely or are partially impacted by these economic and market turbulence. There are a section of professionals just out of the recently concluded recession, or yet to conclude slowdown, since the great depression, who thinks about the so called protected professions during the time of slowdown, recession or depression. This sense of belief has led many a professional turn to these selected band of professions either by switching their career graph or by acquiring a new set of educational degrees or diplomas. Grapevine knowledge would point out to professions like teaching, healthcare, utility services to be those dreamt ones which may remain unmoved even by the mightiest economic turbulence. This is more of a wishful thinking as professionals representing these industries are getting affected intangibly(in a networked economy) as their respective employers are finding novel ways to reduce their expenses, which at times indirectly lead to forced or voluntary resignation en-masse.The ones who leave behind their lucrative professions for these selected band so as to make themselves immune against the market forces realizes that they were involved in a hara-kiri or one which is shortlived. These chopping and changing also allow the employers to segregate the genuine ones from the opportunist and thereby reward those who had weathered the storms even when the going was tough. It is therefore fool hardy to think that some professions are immune to recession/slowdown/depression.The actual happening is market driven, irrespective of the sector one is in.Its time for the common sense to sink in.

Different Training Inputs and techniques during meltdown?

Contingencies calls for out of the box thinking commensurate with the happenings. While the panic of recession is catching up with the global audience, the aftereffects being felt,it is time for the trainers, notably the ones representing my tribe (read-management and soft skills trainers)to do some changes in their training content, delivery, tools and techniques used. A thorough soul searching so as to know the roots of the current slowdown the global economy is witnessing, would pinpoint towards the aspect of unethical business practices, greed, temptation to achieve astronomical sales and revenue figures so as to create the much needed difference in the market place, have instead gone awary! The bubble ultimately gave in!Behemoths like Lehman brothers, Freddie Mac, Frannie Mae, American International Group to name a few have experienced instances which neither their founding fathers, nor the honest stakeholders would have ever imagined.

In such situations it is imperative to touch upon these aspects while training the audiences, be it the management scholar, MBA student or the corporate executive so that they understand their domain perspectives from the cause and effect point of view. The ideal blend is necessary so the trainers need to intertwin their contents with the cause and fallout of the event, cited to be the biggest since the depression the world witnessed in the thirties.

Know more from me about such training techniques and tools.

Recessionary times......offers opportunity

Recession or the slowdown witnessed by the Indian economy should be leveraged by India Inc., so that organizations come out stronger and is able to grow once the tide turns favour of the companies. The same happened after the great depression and even the small blips the world witnessed post 9/11, SARS, ASEAN financial crisis.Companies are into a cost cutting spree, however organizations has to continue grooming employees and also look for greener pastures, once the sky is cleared of the dark clouds. Many successful start-ups which are considered global behemoths today, kicked off their operations albeit at the planning stage, when they were looking down the barrel(read recessionary times).

My article on How to Manage during Recession/Slowdown

MANAGEMENT
Managing Turbulence -- Manishankar Chakraborty
The global economy is witnessing a free fall and Indian companies are also being hit by this phenomenon. Companies across sectors are resorting to cost-cutting by offering pink slips to the non-performers. The day of equilibrium is a thing of the past. Global economies are witnessing topsy-turvy changes within short spans owing to factors like global inflation due to skyrocketing oil prices, shortage of food stuffs, subprime crisis of the US and a host of other geo-political reasons. This article discusses how the organization and employees collectively can handle such challenges in the overall interest of all the stakeholders.
